Carignan
A Mediterranean grape found in Languedoc and Roussillon reds.
Carignan can provide colour, freshness and tannins, in blends or alone. Yield, ripeness and winemaking produce different styles. “Old vines” alone does not tell you the exact age of the vines.
What to notice
For comparison, choose two wines with a stated Carignan proportion.

Style descriptions are guides, not rules: vintage, vineyard, blending and maturation change the result.
Languedoc — Languedoc is both a broad wine region and a regional PDO: the two scopes are not interchangeable.
Roussillon — The key distinction is between dry wine and vin doux naturel, whose fermentation is stopped by adding alcohol.
