Piedmont
Barolo and Barbaresco combine delicate perfume, firm tannin and slow evolution.
Terroirs, appellations and label clues
Barolo and Barbaresco are separate Nebbiolo appellations; Langhe Nebbiolo is another entry point. Piedmont also makes whites: Gavi uses Cortese and Asti Moscato. Pale colour does not imply low tannins.
To get started
Taste Barolo beside Barbaresco: both show Nebbiolo, while place and maturation nuance the result.
Key grapes
Nebbiolo — Rose, cherry, tannin and the reward of patience. Its relatively pale colour can belie firm tannins: taste the structure before judging by appearance.
Compare regions
Compare regions in the same country too: the same grape can produce different wines as climate, site and producer choices change.
Style descriptions are guides, not rules: vintage, vineyard, blending and maturation change the result.
