Rioja
From pure fruit to the spice of oak maturation, Rioja offers many readings of Tempranillo.
Terroirs, appellations and label clues
Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental are the three main DOCa zones. Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva concern regulated maturation, not village or vineyard names. Rioja also makes whites and rosés.
To get started
Compare a fruit-led Tempranillo with a wine showing more maturation influence to understand the range of styles.
Key grapes
Tempranillo — Red fruit, spice and an affinity for maturation. Compare a young wine with a longer-aged bottling: oak can add spice, but does not by itself define quality.
Compare regions
Compare regions in the same country too: the same grape can produce different wines as climate, site and producer choices change.
Style descriptions are guides, not rules: vintage, vineyard, blending and maturation change the result.
