Ribera del Duero
Fruit, tannins and maturation carry different weight depending on producer and wine.
Terroirs, appellations and label clues
Tinto Fino and Tinta del País are local Tempranillo names. Ribera del Duero is a Spanish DO, distinct from Portuguese Douro despite the shared river. Long oak ageing is not universal: check the wine category.
To get started
Taste a fruit-led Tempranillo followed by one with more maturation influence to explore the appellation’s range.
Key grapes
Tempranillo — Red fruit, spice and an affinity for maturation. Compare a young wine with a longer-aged bottling: oak can add spice, but does not by itself define quality.
Compare regions
Compare regions in the same country too: the same grape can produce different wines as climate, site and producer choices change.
Style descriptions are guides, not rules: vintage, vineyard, blending and maturation change the result.
